OFW in Kuwait Almira (not her real name) is full of wounds, scars, and burns of an iron in her back, arms, legs, and hands. She has bumps in her head, swollen lips, and broken teeth. According to her, this was what she had gone through in the hands of her female employer in Kuwait.
Even her ears weren’t safe. Almira shared that her employer would stab her ears with a pencil or keys until they start to bleed.
Every day her female employer would beat her up and imprison her. Her male employer also harmed her on two occasions by kicking her until she bled.
Furthermore, her employers refuse to feed her and would call her a dog.
The 22-year-old endured this maltreatment for three years until she was able to escape and reach the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait.
“I didn’t know how I was able to endure it. Maybe because I love my parents.”
The embassy promised to focus on Almira’s case for her to obtain justice. “This includes filing a criminal complaint, a civil complaint for damages, and … blacklisting of the employers so that they won’t be allowed to have a Filipino employee,” said Vice Consul Shiena Tesorero.
The embassy will also investigates the agency that deployed Almira when she was barely 18 years old.
In the meantime, Almira is under the agency’s care and is currently undergoing counseling.

Dapat mabigyan ng hustisya. At itigil na ang pagpadala ng kasambahay sa middle east…maraming salamat po.
justice for almirah, please. help almirah to gain her justice from their evil and dog attitude employer!!! OFW. is human bieng also. help her to gain her justice!
I’ve worked in Kuwait and this is a typical scenario. You see maid out with their employers dining out while they sit in another table just waiting and without any food. Kuwait is not a place to work as a help. If you visit the embassy you will see a lot of helpers who ran away from their employers. Sad but true.

Open Letter to POEA Chief Cacdac and the POEA Governing Board,
Thank you for Preventively Suspending UPPI agency owned by Ms Estrelita Hizon, effective 6/30 altho it is undeniably overdue because UPPI should have been suspended upon discovery of UPPI as the deploying agency of an OFW with horrific injuries who run away from her abusive employer of 3 1/2 years seeking protection at the Philippine Embassy on 6/20.
Now, allow me to respectfully remind you that you seem to ignore my other request that Ms. Estrelita Hizon should not be allowed to sit at the POEA Governing Board.
How could you justify allowing a member under investigation by the POEA for HUMAN TRAFFICKING allegations to continue occupying one of the 6 top positions at the POEA Governing Board? http://www.poea.gov.ph/about/officials.htm
Actually, you need not wait for someone like yours truly to point out to you a very obvious violation of the rules of moral decency since this is a clear CONFLICT of INTEREST, not only on the part of Ms. Estrelita Hizon, but also POEA’s to allow her to sit on the POEA Governing Board.
Sincerely,
maria elizabeth embry
