LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — Nearly 7,900 families of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Catanduanes are set to receive 25 kilograms of rice each under an assistance program of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
According to OWWA Bicol Regional Director Jenivie Diaz-Aguallo, the distribution began in Virac and was scheduled to cover all 11 municipalities of Catanduanes from July 27 to July 31.

Active or Inactive OWWA Members May Qualify
OWWA clarified that OFWs may receive the assistance regardless of whether their OWWA membership is currently active or inactive, provided that they have an existing record with the agency.
For OFWs who are still working abroad, a qualified family member—including a spouse, child, parent, or other eligible relative—may claim the rice on their behalf by presenting a valid ID and proof of relationship.
OFWs personally claiming the assistance may present their passport and, when necessary, identification showing their residency in Catanduanes.
Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the assistance, saying the 25-kilo rice allocation provides meaningful support to their households.

OWWA Reminds OFWs to Keep Membership Active
While inactive members with existing records may qualify for this particular assistance, OWWA encouraged migrant workers to maintain active membership to gain access to a broader range of welfare programs.
These may include assistance involving medical needs, death benefits, livelihood opportunities, reintegration, and other services available to qualified OFWs and their families.
OWWA also reminded Filipinos planning to work overseas to follow legal deployment procedures and properly register with the agency. Workers who leave the Philippines as tourists or outside established procedures may not have an OWWA record, which could make immediate access to assistance more difficult.
The distribution in Catanduanes had previously faced delays due to funding and procurement requirements, according to OWWA, but assistance to qualified beneficiaries is now being implemented.
