Saudi Arabia’s labor authorities have emphasized the entitlement of domestic workers to receive a fully compensated day off each week.
The Musaned platform, which oversees domestic labor matters in the kingdom, stated that this practice is crucial for ensuring the well-being of workers and improving their productivity throughout the remaining workdays.
It is mandated by regulations governing the contractual relationship between domestic workers and their employers that a weekly day off be provided to the domestic worker.
This provision is designed to protect the rights of both parties and to foster a balanced and equitable work environment. Musaned has called upon all employers to comply with the applicable regulations to promote a work environment founded on respect and shared rights.
Saudi authorities have recently sought ways to regulate the domestic labour market. The Ministry of Human Resources set up Musaned in order to educate customers about their rights, duties and other services, including visa issuance and recruitment requests, as well as contractual relations between the employer and worker.
Saudi Arabia will introduce new rules in 2023 for the employment of domestic workers. The minimum age is 21 years old to protect contractual rights.
According to the regulations, dues owed by workers or their heirs are first-degree debts. Contracts must be for a specific period of time; otherwise, they are renewable for a year after the worker’s starting date.
Saudi Arabia has a wide range of domestic workers, including housekeepers.
