Two Newmarket, Ontario, health-care workers are accused of stealing an elderly Newmarket resident’s banking information. Police say that two health-care workers stole the banking information of an elderly Newmarket, Ont. patient and took out nearly $1 million.
In a press releaseissued on Friday, York Regional Police stated that the victim reported to them in August that she had been robbed of a large sum of money.
The police launched an investigation, and identified two suspects. One of them was caring for the victim in her role as a personal assistant.
The suspects are said to have accessed the victim’s bank account illegally and then visited “various” financial establishments to withdraw the money.
The suspects were identified as Maputol residents Lloyd, 37 and Juvie, 38.
Police told CTV News Toronto that the victim was under Juvie’s care before the alleged fraud. Lloyd is a registered nurse who works in Newmarket.
The police also confirmed that the suspects were married.
Juvie Maputol faces charges of theft by person with power of attorney, theft of over $5,000 and misappropriation money held under instruction, among others.
Lloyd Maputol has been charged with fraud of over $5,000, theft of over $5,000 and laundering proceeds from crime.
In a press release, police said that investigators were releasing photos because they believed there could be more victims.
In a separate press release, the College of Nurses of Ontario said that they were aware of Lloyd Maputol’s charges as an RN and took the allegations very seriously.
The statement read: “CNO is dedicated to upholding the highest standard of practice, and ensuring that health care professionals that we regulate adhere to professional and ethical standards.”
