MANILA — The Department of Foreign Affairs is examining the possible effects of an embargo on deployments to Kuwait, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo said on Friday.
The top diplomat revealed that the government is yet to make a decision about the proposal.
“Proposal pa lang naman ito so far but I wanted to assure that this is an issue na pinaga-aralan natin closely with the Department of Migrant Workers— marami ring factors ito (This is still a proposal but I wanted to assure that we are looking closely at this issue with the DMW— it involves a lot of factors),” he said in an interview with PTV’s Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon.
“Wala pang decision but we’re studying closely at kung ano ‘yong mga effects kung sakaling magkaroon ng ban (There is no decision yet but we are studying closely what will be the effects should we impose a ban),” he added.
Raffy Tulfo, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Migrant Workers, called earlier for a ban on the deployment of new Filipino household workers in Kuwait after the deaths of Filipino domestic employees, including Dafnie Nacalaban, whose body was discovered buried in a gardener’s backyard of her employer’s house in Saad Al-Abdullah in Jahra.
He said that a ban should be implemented until the Philippine government is able to coordinate with Kuwaiti officials and sit down to discuss additional requirements before foreign employers hire Filipinos. –Source Philippine News Agency
