Dafnie Nacalaban, an overseas Filipino worker, was supposed to surprise her family by returning from Kuwait.
Before she disappeared for two months, her body was discovered in the backyard of her employer.
“Tinatanong namin siya kailan talaga uwi niya. Sabi niya, ‘Basta i-surprise ko kayo sa December.’ Ito pala yung surprise niya,” said her sister Michael Nacalaban Lensahan.
(We asked when she planned to return home. She said that she would surprise you in December. It turned out to be her surprise.
Michael said that during their last conversation, in May 2024 with her sister, there were no problems.
“Opo, balak po talaga na itago po [ang insidente]. Ang hiling lang po namin sana makauwi yung kapatid namin tapos mabigyan po ng hustisya kung ano ang talagang nangyari sa kaniya. Bakit po ganun ang ginawa sa kaniya?” she added.
(Yes, [this incident] was planned to be hidden. Our only wish is for our sister to come home, and that she receives justice for what happened to her. Why did they do it to her?)
Eduardo de Vega, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs, revealed that the suspect’s brother was the one who reported the incident which led to the discovery of a body.
He also revealed that the suspect had already been detained.
“Yung kapatid mismo ng suspect sinabihan yung pulis. Ininvestigate nung pulis. Nakita ng pulis sa bahay yung bangkay, advanced state of decomposition, mag da-dalawang buwan na,” he said.
The police were notified by the suspect’s brother. The police investigated. The police investigated.
“We assure the public that the government will do everything it can to seek justice. Malungkot na ito nangyari, katapusanng taon (It is sad that this happened in the last quarter of the year), he added.
