MANILA, Philippines – Single parents now have access to free coverage through the state-run Philippine Health Insurance Corp.
PhilHealth’s Circular 2024-0020 stated that the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act, or Republic Act 11861, provides automatic inclusion of single parents and their children in the National Health Insurance Program.
PhilHealth stated that the sole parent should be enrolled under the “indirect contributor” membership type, and “solo parent” as a subtype.
The agency stated that “a revised PhilHealth membership form will be issued with the appropriate membership type and subtypes for the single parent.”
The note noted that “only those who have a valid solo parent ID card (SPIC), shall be registered or tagged directly as indirect contributors-solo parent.”
The circular stated that “the applicant shall be informed of the importance of first obtaining the SPIC from either the Solo Parents Office/Solo Parents Division of the concerned Local Government Unit to update their membership records to PhilHealth,”
LRay Villafuerte of Camarines, who announced earlier the free health services, is the main author of RA 11861 which expanded coverage and benefits for single mothers and their families.
