Joy Ocampo, a 34-year-old domestic worker from Kuwait was found hang!ng on the cabinet door by her coworker on 8 September at 8:30pm in the home of the mother of the employer. The d3ath was suspected to be a su!cide due to a series of arguments between her and her boyfriend in the Philippines.
According to Times Kuwait Ocampo is a Bicol native and mother of three. She has been working in Kuwait for her employer since the last year. This is the second job she has secured in Kuwait, having previously worked in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. In an exclusive interview, Mia (Not her true name) a co-worker of Ocampo said that on the 8th September, they were dropped off at the house of their mother’s employer. This was a routine when their employers had business to attend to. Mia, who looks after their employer’s daughter, and the household worker of the mother’s boss were all upstairs in the second floor. Ocampo offered to cook food for them.
Mia heard Ocampo having a loud argument with her boyfriend over the phone. This was a regular occurrence for Ocampo and her boy.
“Around 8:30 pm our employers returned to collect us. I headed to the vehicle while we waited. When no one came out, I went to the kitchen and called out, but no response. Then I proceeded to the room and found Ocampo with her thin jacket wr@pped around her neck hang!ng from the cabinet. Mia narrated that she panicked and called her employers, who rushed over to the scene. The police were called to the scene, and Ocampo was taken away by ambulance.
Mia said that before Ocampo’s demise, she had called her friend to tell her that her boyfriend told her that she should stay away and stop talking. Ocampo’s employer was saddened by the incident. “She should have informed us that she had problems at home and we could help resolve them,” commented Ocampo’s employer. The case has been referred by the Philippine Embassy to conduct investigations.
