Financial Assistance For Distressed OFW Increased by DMW

Despite the government’s obligation to provide financial assistance, many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in financial distress have faced financial difficulties once they arrive in the Philippines.

The Department of Migrant Workers, realizing that the financial assistance provided by the government is minimal, has approved a higher level of assistance through its Agarang Kalinga a Saklolo para sa mga OFWs na Nangangailangan Fund (AKSYON).

Prior to this, the financial aid was only P30,000. This did not include OFWs who were killed and repatriated or ships that were attacked or affected by a conflict.

In a Department Order issued by the DMW on Wednesday, August 14, it stated that OFWs who are severely affected or displaced because of the economic downturn in their host country will receive a one-time P50,000 assistance.

The same amount is payable to OFWs who suffer abuses, exploitation, maltreatment, contract violations, illegal recruitment, human trafficking, and natural calamities.

The same amount is given to the families of OFWs detained and serving their sentences abroad.

The Department Order provides P75,000 as a one-time aid to OFWs who suffer from serious illness, injury, or mental condition, and abuse/exploitation that results in physical disability, injuries, or mental condition.
