50 OFWs duped by Facebook-based investment scam

At least 50 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were duped by an online scam from Facebook.  The scam entices the victims to invest their hard-earned money in exchange for the promise of their investment doubling or even tripling.

The OFWs have filed a complaint before the Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Cybercrime Group against Princess Loa Pinuela and Anne Ramos, who reportedly managed the scam on Facebook, which became inactive following the complaint.

The scam promised the doubling of one’s investment in two weeks, and getting thrice of the amount in three weeks.

One of the victims named Lenny said she received her returns twice, but when she invested for a third time, the Facebook account of the investment scheme was suddenly deactivated.  The operators could no longer be reached through the mobile phone numbers they provided.

Lenny said the P5,000 she invested was supposed to be used for the treatment of her child who had epilepsy.

Another victim named Lourdes claimed she had lost P50,000.  She said she had to pay other investors who she recruited into the scheme.
